“By the Sacrifice of Himself”
“… But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself” Hebrews 9:26. The angel told Joseph that purpose of Jesus’ birth was to die for our sins (Matthew 1:21). He was born as a baby, grew up, and faced all the temptations of life just as we do, so that—never yielding to sin—He could be our example of how to live for God in the flesh, yes, but also our perfect sacrifice for sin. As He went to the cross, He was a silent Lamb before the shearers, willing to lay down His life so we might have eternal life with Him one day. His sacrifice first began by leaving the glory He shared from eternity with His Father in heaven. And though the Creator took joy in dwelling with His creation, Jesus was frustrated by mankind’s ignorance and stubbornness of heart at times as well as experiencing other limitations of the flesh. Instead of needing the continual sacrifices of the Levitical priests, Jesus’ sacrifice was ‘once for all’ and thorough in its dealing with the sin of the whole world. And so, with such a sacrifice that Jesus has made, how can you keep from obeying this gospel, living your life as a sacrifice to Him, and telling others the good news?
