Deer in Evening Light

"Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory
and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours
is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all."  -  I Chron. 29:11

I was just about ready to leave the concealed spot where I was hiding when this big boy came on the scene. As the early evening light was fading he moved to a spot in the field I was watching where the setting sun acted as a spotlight. He stopped, turned his head, and posed long enough for me to capture a few images. He looked absolutely regal as he stood there surveying his kingdom. He then slowly made his way across the field and vanished in the surrounding forest. I returned to my Jeep with a smile on my face and gratitude in my heart. My gratitude was not merely for the opportunity to see such a glorious animal but for the One who created him. The glory of all creation is a reflected glory, a reflection of the power and glory of God. He is not only the creator of all things, but is the head of all things. As Christians, I am not sure we fully grasp the majesty of the One we worship. If we did, our worship assemblies would be more concerned with adoration than entertainment and would elicit humility rather than pride. I may be old-fashioned, but I believe reverence would even affect how we dress when we gather to worship. God is holy and sovereign. We are not. God is not our buddy, he is our Lord. God is not our servant, we are his. As I watched this buck and how he exuded power and superiority, I was in awe. And then I had to ask myself why I am not overcome with the same emotions when I gather to worship the Lord of all creation. The sad thing is, I think I know the answer.  -  John
